Federal Skilled Trades

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a key immigration pathway under Canada’s Express Entry system, designed to attract skilled tradespeople to become permanent residents of Canada. This program offers experienced trades workers the opportunity to settle in Canada and contribute to the country’s labor market. Selection is based on a points-based system, considering factors such as age, work experience, language skills, and job offers or trade certifications.

To qualify for the FSTP, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Work Experience – A minimum of two years of full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in a skilled trade within the last five years. This experience must be in an eligible trade recognized by the program.

Job Offer or Trade Certification – Candidates must either:

– Have a valid job offer for full-time, non-seasonal employment in Canada (for at least one year), OR

– Hold a certificate of qualification in their trade issued by a Canadian province or territory.

Language Proficiency – Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English or French, with minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scores of 5 in speaking and listening, and CLB 4 in reading and writing.

Education – There is no formal education requirement for this program; however, applicants must meet the qualifications required for their specific trade.

Medical and Security Clearance – Applicants must pass medical examinations and background checks to ensure they meet Canada’s health and security standards.

The FSTP covers various skilled trades under the National Occupational Classification (NOC), including:

🔹 Construction & Industrial Trades – Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, pipefitters, machinists
🔹 Transportation Trades – Truck drivers, aircraft maintenance engineers
🔹 Food & Beverage Industry – Chefs, bakers
🔹 Other Technical Trades – HVAC mechanics, industrial instrument technicians, heavy equipment operators
